It is also with regret that we will also be bidding farewell to another very good and long serving CARA Committee member in the Summer.
Bodo has worked hard for over ten years actively campaigning on key issues affecting the neighborhood with a special emphasis on matters relating to commerce and the environment. Besides being "Mr BBQ" - Bodo was the key man in organising the hugely successful annual CARA gathering; he has been committed in representing residents interests on the Kingston Town Centre Management Committee and with various Thames Landscape Strategy projects.
Bodo has always exhibited a unique sense of humour and his presence will be sorely missed by all. We wish him well in his new life in
Pat Mackay has decided to take a well-earned break from the CARA committee. Pat has been a real champion of
We owe her a real debt of thanks and hope to welcome her to future CARA events - especially the next CARA bulb planting session, which for once she won’t have to organise!
Please attend and have your say regarding any problems in your area or street and what you would like to see police doing – it’s your police force so have your say.
In addition, there is Community Panel meeting, covering Tudor and Canbury, on 23rd May 6pm Hawker Centre. Six volunteers are needed. The committee meet four times a year to advise police on the needs of the community.
Police will be equipped with hand held laser speed guns, from July, which will be deployed in the CARA area to combat the issue of speeding in our streets
If you are able to donate any sports equipment the Pavilion would be most grateful. Contact Trevor.
The 2007 CARA Community Grant Programme has been created to invest in projects which underpin the aims and objectives of CARA to protect and enhance amenities within the area for all residents and users.
A wide range of groups can apply for grants including charities, voluntary and community groups, social enterprises and sports projects. We expect most of the grants we make to be in the region of £500.
If you are interested in applying, please complete the simple outline proposal form which can found on our website.

CARA puts significant efforts into the local planning process and got closely involved with the Sainsbury's development on the former British Gas site. Another area of concern is the planned Hotel development on the remainder of the Power Station site (due to its size, traffic implications, electric light pollution into Canbury Gardens and the general impact on the tranquility of the gardens), the Rockware Plastics housing development and the multi-story car-park on the Skerne Rd surface car park site. The Rotunda leisure establishment near Kingston Railway Station had similar implications and CARA believes the Council should consider all of these planning applications as a whole rather than on their individual merits.
CARA is committed to the reduction of both the speed and volume of traffic in the area. CARA supports the view that the riverside area is a spectacular beauty spot and should not be ruined by traffic. More priority needs to be given to pedestrians and cyclists, encouraging vehicles to slow down or avoid the area. Congestion, speeding vehicles and subsequent safely issues, especially on sunny weekend days, are matters that continue to receive CARA focus.
CARA work with both the Council and Police to minimise anti-social behaviour. Kingston Police can be contacted on 020 8541 1212 or through their website at http://www.met.police.uk/kingston/. Kingston anti-graffiti hotline is on 020 8547 4646 or email graffiti@rbk.kingston.gov.uk.
With the warm summer nights comes a problem for residents living near Canbury Gardens – late night revellers, complete with their own refreshments, carousing well into the early hours. If CARA residents are disturbed by this, they should call the duty officer at Kingston Police Station on 020-8541-1212. All calls are logged and if multiple residents complain, we’re more likely to see some Police action.
If you are affected by aircraft noise, please contact BAA on their 24 hour complaints line 0800 344844.
This is particularly an issue for residents living to the north of the CARA area (nearest Ham). Battersea Heliport has changed ownership from GKN to the Harrods group of companies who are promoting more flights. Noise can be a particular problem during the week of Farnborough Airshow (late July). The Dept of Transport Helicopter complaint line is on 020 7944 5462. The Civil Aviation Authority can also be contacted on 020 7379 7311. Both are helpful and take residents complaints very seriously.
The picture below shows CARA from the air (early 1990's) prior to the re-development of the Power Station site and the Gas Works
CARA is the area bordered by Richmond Road to the east, Lower Kings Road & Canbury Place to the south, the River Thames to the west and Hawker Leisure to the north.
CARA campaigns on key issues facing residents in this area.
